I think success is most often times defined as reaching your employment and financial goals in a timely manner. A true success in the United States might be someone who has done well in school, landed a great job, found the perfect person to marry, bought the absolutely greatest house ever and were lucky enough to have two beautiful children. That is most definitely success -- but there are other successes as well.
If the above scenario is your idea of success, then you should by all means strive for it. It may not be that easy though. There are obstacles which may cross your path. One of these is that you don’t get into the college you want to go to. At that moment your life is going down the drain and there’s nothing you can do about it. Perhaps you get into a college your family just simply can’t afford. Perhaps after getting through all of this you don’t get the job of your dreams for quite some time, or ever. You always just seem one person away, or one report away from the position becoming yours. Success can be measured in how well you stand up to these obstacles and overcome them. Some of the most successful people in the world are those who learn to overcome their problems. Make the best of the college you do wind up in. It’s all about what you learn, and only you can control those aspects of education. Do the very best job you can in your position at work and congratulate those who seem to be getting the big promotion. But don’t give up -- just keep working at it and looking for your dream to come through somewhere else. By not giving in to obstacles in these areas you are more of a success than you know. You are successful at standing on your own feet and not giving into the fear and sadness that follows a blow in life. You are stronger, tougher, and smarter than you were before. That sounds like success to me. Sometimes no matter how many plans you make and no matter how hard you try life hands you unsurmountable issues to deal with. During the latest recession there were many people in their 50’s and 60’s who were laid off from their jobs. These people did need their jobs. Unfortunately, no matter how good they were at them, or how smart they were, and no matter how much experience they had emassed over this lifetime of working, their ages prevented them from being re-employed in the normal workplace. Then suddenly there was a resurgence of older workers working for less than they were worth, or trying a new career, or opening up a business based on a lifelong hobby. They didn’t give in to it, they didn’t cry over spilled milk. They were successful in their pursuit of just being allowed to live their lives. Success is about meeting your dreams while you still allow yourself the pleasure of dreaming. Success is being the best person you can be. It’s about having wonderful relationships with your family, friends and professional encounters. I do believe the biggest measure of success is not how much of a fortune you have put together in your lifetime, but how those who know you remember you, look forward to seeing you, and when they do think of those times you have spent together a smile comes to their faces. Success is fleeting -- it comes and goes. The real success is rising above it.
