I think success is most often times defined as reaching your employment and financial goals in a timely manner. A true success in the United States might be someone who has done well in school, landed a great job, found the perfect person to marry, bought the absolutely greatest house ever and were lucky enough to have two beautiful children. That is most definitely success -- but there are other successes as well.
If the above scenario is your idea of success, then you should by all means strive for it. It may not be that easy though. There are obstacles which may cross your path. One of these is that you don’t get into the college you want to go to. At that moment your life is going down the drain and there’s nothing you can do about it. Perhaps you get into a college your family just simply can’t afford. Perhaps after getting through all of this you don’t get the job of your dreams for quite some time, or ever. You always just seem one person away, or one report away from the position becoming yours. Success can be measured in how well you stand up to these obstacles and overcome them. Some of the most successful people in the world are those who learn to overcome their problems. Make the best of the college you do wind up in. It’s all about what you learn, and only you can control those aspects of education. Do the very best job you can in your position at work and congratulate those who seem to be getting the big promotion. But don’t give up -- just keep working at it and looking for your dream to come through somewhere else. By not giving in to obstacles in these areas you are more of a success than you know. You are successful at standing on your own feet and not giving into the fear and sadness that follows a blow in life. You are stronger, tougher, and smarter than you were before. That sounds like success to me. Sometimes no matter how many plans you make and no matter how hard you try life hands you unsurmountable issues to deal with. During the latest recession there were many people in their 50’s and 60’s who were laid off from their jobs. These people did need their jobs. Unfortunately, no matter how good they were at them, or how smart they were, and no matter how much experience they had emassed over this lifetime of working, their ages prevented them from being re-employed in the normal workplace. Then suddenly there was a resurgence of older workers working for less than they were worth, or trying a new career, or opening up a business based on a lifelong hobby. They didn’t give in to it, they didn’t cry over spilled milk. They were successful in their pursuit of just being allowed to live their lives. Success is about meeting your dreams while you still allow yourself the pleasure of dreaming. Success is being the best person you can be. It’s about having wonderful relationships with your family, friends and professional encounters. I do believe the biggest measure of success is not how much of a fortune you have put together in your lifetime, but how those who know you remember you, look forward to seeing you, and when they do think of those times you have spent together a smile comes to their faces. Success is fleeting -- it comes and goes. The real success is rising above it.

Ordinary refers to not standing out or being radical and this leads to feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. Being ordinary also means not being called by the teacher to represent the class or being classified as a group noun like “everybody else” or “the rest of the group.” Some people love being ordinary because they don’t like the attention. Others like being a “big fish in a small pond” and are happy with that. What about you? A Great Kind of Super OrdinaryEating, drinking, sleeping, walking, and running are ordinary things we take for granted but they are essential to living a full life. Ordinary is important and the idea that ordinary is boring will ultimately depend on your personal outlook. Doing ordinary things can be amazing and fun just as being labeled ordinary can be extraordinary and unique. To be super ordinary, you need to start living a life where you find satisfaction. If you’re in school, you have no choice but to follow school authorities but you can work on the something after school. If you choose something that thrills you, it will give you the motivation to excel and be willing to go through the dictates of school work and teachers. Some of the common excuses used by people to avoid stepping out are: • I have no time • I have no money • I can’t do it on my own and my friends won’t help me • My family and friends will laugh at me or be embarrassed • It’s just too much trouble If you have used these reasons or anything similar, then you can only blame yourself for being in a position where you think you are ordinary. How To Step OutNot that being super ordinary is good enough but if you want to try going outside your comfort zone, here are a few suggestions:
Finally, if you must learn something, let it be this: the people who are critical you don’t matter. What matters is that you make an effort to try something new. Even if you fall flat on your face or you get laughed, the important thing is that you tried. And next time, you will do better and be happier because it’s a start of a new comfort zone – that is, stepping out. No Contest! Time For Break-Away ThinkingDo you know what the biggest problem with competition is? First of all competition is another word for contest, burnout. Athletes known all about this but then so do executives, teachers, students, accountants – just about everyone who works for success. In fact, even the richest in the world understand what burnout means – although they experience it on a different level wherein burnout may be synonymous with boredom or a dwindling number of options to dream and aim for. Signs of BurnoutBurnout refers to a condition where a person starts to lose interest and focus on the very skill or environment he or she is trained in. Much of burnout according to psychologists is due to chronic stress. Some of the obvious signs of an impending burnout are: • Fatigue • Lack of motivation • Frustration • Difficulty in concentrating • Health problems • Sudden and unexpected problems with personal relationships What Should You DoStop it! An old funny sit-com with a doctor and patient showed just one answer to the patient who kept complaining and feeling down about life. He simply said, “Stop it!” By this, the doctor means to remove cause of the stress but also to stop being negative. Focus on your problems and you make your situation more complicated. However, if you focus on one step forward at a time, you find a way out of your hole.
Second, unplug and start to be creative. All your gadgets – and you probably have at least 2 (a mobile phone and a computer) should be put under controlled access. Learn to be inventive, creative, think out-of-the-box, and most importantly, learn to enjoy the simpler joys of life. By being a creator instead of a competitor, you gain back the value of your goals and objectives. You learn to step aside and focus on what is more important – You! Success is not about your competitors; it’s not even about the race to the top. It’s about you and what you can achieve honestly, without compromise on your morals, and with less stress. Remember how you started? There was a lot of stress because of the steep learning curve – but you took it! You loved it! Why? It’s simple. You did not let the stress and competition get to you. Did you know that many of the world’s most creative inventions came to the inventor in a flash when the mind was not under stress? The fact is when you are under chronic stress; you misread a lot of things – even the perfect answer that would take you to the next level in your journey to success. So, stop and give yourself some time to be a creator instead of a competitor. |
